BANDANEIRA

2013–2014 · Archival inkjet prints

BANDANEIRA is a series of large-scale photographs by Jonas St. Michael. The title refers to the Banda Islands, a small Indonesian archipelago once central to the global spice trade and European colonial expansion, where the project was first conceived.

Although the photographs were produced in Mumbai, the title deliberately displaces the work from its geographic setting. Rather than anchoring the series to a single location, it invokes a broader historical landscape shaped by trade, migration, and colonialism.

Drawing on the city's streets, architecture, and everyday life, each photograph begins with observations before being transformed through staging and intervention. Some scenes are carefully constructed, while others appropriate existing locations that are subtly redirected. The resulting images occupy an uncertain space between documentation and invention, where the familiar becomes quietly theatrical.

The series continues St. Michael's ongoing exploration of photography as a medium that both records and constructs reality. Rather than treating photographs as transparent descriptions of the world, BANDANEIRA proposes that the world itself is already mediated through performance and representation. Existing somewhere between documentary and fiction, or what might be described as semi-fiction, the work invites viewers to question the stability of place, identity, and the photographic image itself.
